Learn from Stanford doctor and leading expert in allergy treatment and prevention, Dr. Kari Nadeau, on how you can stop allergies early on.

Dr. Kari Nadeau is the Naddisy Foundation Endowed Professor of Pediatric Food Allergy, Immunology, and Asthma at Stanford University and the director of the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research at Stanford University. For more than 30 years, she has devoted herself to understanding how environmental and genetic factors affect the risk of developing allergies and asthma, and the molecular mechanisms underlying the diseases.

As one of the nation’s foremost experts in adult and pediatric allergy and asthma, Dr. Nadeau’s research is laying the groundwork for a variety of potential future therapies to prevent and cure allergies and asthma. She leads a diverse team of specialists—in areas from immunology to chemical engineering—a team that was among the first to show that high dimensional immunophenotyping of T cells involved in allergy could be used in therapies for patients. Her research has also shown that blocking antibodies in conjunction with allergen immunotherapy produced desensitization even in patients with up to five food allergens. She has overseen more than 40 clinical trials and enrolled more than 2,000 patients in allergy studies. Her work has changed the lives of many who, for the first time in their lives, are able to control life-threatening food allergies.

Dr. Nadeau received her MD and PhD from Harvard Medical School. She completed a residency in pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital and a clinical fellowship in asthma and immunology at Stanford and at University of California, San Francisco. Her research and scientific breakthroughs have been covered in Lancet, JAMA, Nature Medicine, US News and World Report, New York Times Magazine and Discover Magazine, as well as other national and international media.

Dr. Nadeau has served as a White House Medical Consultant, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the EPA, NHLBI DSMB, NIH Study Sections, FARE Scientific Board, and a member of the American Lung Association Medical Board. She serves as the director of the Mechanism Committee for the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and is a member of ASCI (American Society of Clinical Investigation).

Advances in asthma research

Allie Knox says:

god that introduction makes you think that was going to be someone who knows there stuff no disrespect well done for all they achievements but do they titles mean anything ?the main cause of allergys is not genetic or immune its life style …for example fad diets and jumping on the new thing to be cool,,,, 1 in 100 people for example in britian are actually celiac…and like America and and Australia the number are growing because you are glorifying it…god bless! people with a real allergy because you are making it more expensive for them and at a bigger risk.."the whole opinion of they cant all be celiac"…is risk enough if your out for dinner being served food…so as this problem spirals out of control you are doing a safe test in a lab to slowly introduce a trace back into someones diet…maybe you should be questioning the 400,000 grants you want funded ? those statistics bother me also so America and Australia have been doing the g,f diet before us and we are definitely on the rise in great Britain …the story of the twins that's awful I agree but think of all the babies being born today whos parents aren't even going to introduce any allergens at all that is a scary thought …food challenge?!!! your going to need a lot of people on standby when this starts…brilliant name dropping of all these fantastic people ,I'm sure that the new ideas and  scientific breakthrough??? was there all along its called common sense…ask any of the older generation …a new opinion from someone that is supposedly trained and knows what they are talking about got listened to by all the other goons with the same degree in self importance (qualification, name drop alert!) yawn and social media ?fads however you put it has gone mad…the entire health organisation should be apologising for making a mistake by saying you shouldn't introduce babies to food early on etc,not you though I'm sure after all you will be quite a sensible parent of five and probably ignored your own medical advice you dished out to your patients! I love ted talks listen to them all the time but this has annoyed me so much…want a cost effective soloution by everyone a farm animal…chicken per say, immune system covered eggs introduced at a young age, self suficiant and when you know your going to be just fine! shock horror …plate that bad boy up n get the whole family to tuck right in !!! I was going to say this talk shouldn't be on here ,but you know what like a cleary labelled ingredient in 20years time we will know exactly what this contains NONSENSE cheers!

They may be more likely allergic to it later on.
Sounds great to me.

Qwufi says:

Yes: enviroment. The first and foremost cause of food allergy are the food companies. They sacrifice their consumers health on the altar of profit. There are many revealing documents about it yet they can continue without distruption.

She is now not allergic to milk. Odd but worked. Oh and when pregnant they told me don't eat this or that I didn't listen. My kids have zero allergies. Yes I ate fish a lot

The major causes are more than likely all the chemicals, antibiotics, growth hormones, pesticides, herbicides, GMO, etc. in our food, air, water and earth. This was not addressed in Dr. Nadeau's presentation.

Sumit Khanna says:

Food is so much processed today, that food allergies are certain! The way we cook, the way we store, and the way we feed, all makes up a part! Coming back to the base from where we started isn't possible! Modern day dairy is open to all! Then comes the culprits like vegetable oils, trans fats, processed sugar, preservatives, and none the less…. the packaging! The damn stuff is packed in the so called PLASTICS! Organic food is taken for granted, because just a drop cannot clean the ocean! The more we go into the Science, the dark side is, the more we make these byproducts, that are later realised to be harmful! Science is imperative, but Food should be kept simple! Probably, that would be the end to most of the allergies!!!

L S says:

Son has severe food allergies. Did all that you recommend except diverse food because he was so fussy. Wish I had really pushed a variety of foods when he was too small to protest.
Can we overcome this now that he is older?

Sebas Eu says:

I asked my old relatives, friends, persons I know. They did not knowed alergies are also from food. I mean, yes, strawberries gave you sometimes a small alergic reaction, eggs are (in excess) affecting the liver, but alergies like honey, bread, or any aliment were unknown.
Why do you not ask: The human are eating same food from thousands of years and suddenly, now, decided that is fashionable to have an alergy at it. Are you sure that we are not reacting at something else? Oh, sorry, the gluten, sugar, milk, eggs, are BAD, not as good and clean like the hormons in the animals we eat (chicken, beef, pork), or, like the GMO Monsanto´s healty vitamins we find in the (now sterile) vegetables, fruits, cereals.
HOW the human race managed to live until the present days without those goodies?

Mr Bulgaria pepi says:

I am surprised that this lady being from California does not know about plant-based diet in the overwhelming scientific evidence proving that animal products of all kinds are not for human consumption very surprised that she does not know about dr. Greger and many other doctors that are currently going around the world and proving with evidence that animal protein found in milk eggs and meet and any dairy product is not for us humans that's why many people would be breaking out and getting many allergic reactions and this person is very educated but in the same time does not mention any of the scientific findings of the impact of animal products in human bodies.

Moira W says:

How is this technique 'radical' and 'revolutionary' when this is exactly what we did with our kids growing up in the 1980's ???

Air Elegant says:

I am allergy to seafood, good for me to stop high cholesterol food like shrimps and crabs. 🤗

Stephen HOARD JR says:

Is there scientific testing that shows us to eat & drink for a thriving LIFEstyle in which we may desire?
